Valerie also became a professional consultant in product development, space design, and business, marketing and merchandising for several brands, and presented popular seminars, here and abroad. IFDA benefited directly from her business acumen: she served as president of the New York Chapter and chairman of the Past President Council. She will be widely remembered as a gracious, generous, joyful, and compassionate woman, whose big beautiful smile lit up the lives of all who shared her company and enthusiasm for life.

International Furnishing and Design Association (IFDA), founded in New York City, has 12 chapters worldwide. Providing a professional forum for communication and interaction among its high-profile members, the IFDA promotes career advancement and educational opportunities. Celebrating its 65th Year in 2012 the association is structured to increase public awareness of the furnishings and design industry through specialized programming and service to the community.

The IFDA Educational Foundation, organized in 1970, is the philanthropic arm of the organization, dedicated to the support and service of the home furnishings and interior design community. Celebrating A Recent Commission:

The Contemporary Austin-Jones Center

JAN GERARD, IFDA, and her team at Contract Workroom located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY, are celebrating the completion of a recent commission that was installed in Austin Texas.

Says Jan– "Our project with LTL Architects of NYC is now complete and installed on the Moody Rooftop event space of the The Contemporary Austin-Jones Center, a museum located in downtown Austin, Texas. The Project was a tall order: 250 linear feet of 22 feet high curtains, fully operable. Artisans in our workroom constructed these using 400 meters of an exceptional outdoor fabric from Sefar. The curtains were made with carefully considered details, including rows of topstitching for both durability and beauty."

You can find out more about Jan's workroom for Interior Designers, Architects, and Set Designers at

The Influence and Impact of Color on Home Decor

Image   Image

8:30 AM

at NY NOW

Jacob K Javits Center

Room 1A 01 Lower Level

Tamara Matthews-Stephenson

The keynote presentation will focus on how color choices influence the mood in our home and how color inspires & transforms our interior design.

Tamara will also discuss the current trends on the horizon, the movements of combining and layering color and texture, how the latest technologies influence color and where we are headed for 2017!

Through her presentation you will see inspirations from her travels to Heimtextil in Frankfurt, Deco Off and Maison&Objet in Paris, High Point Market and Mercanteinfiera in Parma, Italy

From her recent trips to London and Paris, images and trends gleaned from fashion shows, pop up shops, street art, gallery openings and book signings will be shared

Tamara is a residential interior designer, freelance writer and product designer working and living in New York City. She and her family divide their time between the bustling city and their beach cottage in the quiet hamlet of Springs in East Hampton. The two different locations suit her personality well and have helped to fine tune her design aesthetic, which some have referred to as "sophisticated cottage."

In 2008, she began merging her former writing experiences with her design training by penning her popular lifestyle blog Nest by Tamara.

In 2015, Tamara and fashion designer Susan Young began collaborating on collections of textiles for the home, which are sold to the design trade in showrooms around the country. Root Cellar Designs are made in America, inspired by the history of decorative arts, nature, fashion and every day items. Just recently the company launched a wall-covering collection.

Tamara has been an IFDA NY board member for 5 Years, as VP of Communications. She spearheaded and managed the non-profit , volunteer-run association's social media platforms and created the IFDA NY blog.

Inspired by Design: Morocco

 Atlas Pop Up Shop

5:30 pm to 8:00 pm

 355 Bowery, between 3rd and 4th Streets

Sitting at a cultural crossroads between East and West, Morocco has always been international in temperament. For centuries, the indigenous population of Berbers has welcomed Arabs, Jews, Christians, artists, merchants, explorers, travelers and others. All have had an influence on culture and the wondrous heritage of the Moroccan artisan.

Artisans have been plying their trade and crafting their wares for hundreds-and in some cases such as rug making-thousands of years. These are skills that are transferred from one generation to another, from master artisan to budding apprentice. They also involve an obsessively detailed and time intensive process, as only traditional tools and methods are used in the creation of authentic handcrafted goods.

Learn how the artisans from four distinct regions of Morocco create their handcrafted products with a unique point of view.

In Response to North Carolina Legislature’s Passing of Bill HB2
For nearly 70 years, the International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA) has maintained its position as the only all-inclusive professional association whose members provide services and products to the vast furnishings and design industry. The organization’s core values promote mutual respect, education, community service, open sharing, industry partnerships, and ethical practices.

With the recent North Carolina legislature’s passing of the bill HB2, IFDA re-asserts its long standing policy: IFDA does not discriminate, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity. In fact, as an organization that prides itself on inclusion, IFDA embraces all its members and industry partners and believes that the diversity in the furnishing and design industry is one of its greatest assets.

“We encourage all members of the industry to stand together in unity for the promotion of equality and diversity,” stated Diane Nicolson, FIFDA, president of IFDA. “We are stronger together than when divided, let us unite people from all ends of the industry and celebrate each other’s uniqueness.”

Thus, as a leader in the furnishings and design industry, IFDA will not only continue to promote the diversity of its membership and that of the greater international design and furnishings communities, but also reflect that support in its programming, membership outreach, and all other activities.
